such a shame how unpolished it was, especially after daytona cce and sega rally not only looked beautiful but also still played fine with a standard controller. one more thing that might help with turning is to constantly have the thumb stick tilted forward and gently rock it toward the left and right for turns... it allows you to make much slighter and more subtle adjustments than trying to tilt it from vertical neutral center. I keep meaning to go back and give it a full shakedown, I got it in the mid or late 2000s and by then my life was more busy with work and friends and Doing Stuff, so games were sorta sidelined. I had wanted it for the longest time because I saw the promo for it on the back of the Sonic R manual whenever I pulled that out :P was in middle school when I got the saturn in 96 and was fortunate to get a handful of stuff from FunCoLand over the few years that followed

This game practically raised me. I remember renting it from The Warehouse for a weekend and I finished parallel 1 on Saturday. I was so disappointed that I'd already finished the game. I was so bored that I decided to just play it again a little bit and see if I could make it through the first part any faster. I made it through on yellow, started "parallel 2" and fell in love with this game. I still have my original copy from way back then, but I only play it on an emulator. Teenaged me definitely loved the ending with Kaye and the fire for no reason. I remember really feeling that guitar riff at the end of that one. Aww man, it's time to play Dark Savior again!!

I remember playing this on PC when it came out but I had to format my computer so I lost all savegames and I never completed it. Last year I then bought it again for Saturn out of nostalgia and for collection purpose. For me it still has a charm in terms of graphics and sounds but as a review says the biggest problem is the tank controls.. I made it up to the last world but the precision jumping it requires doesn't mix well wit the awful controls.. too bad :(

This game was fine when it came out. Your take on this is over dramatic. Spent many hours on this game as a teenager and frankly things like frame rates were not a concern in those days. It's fun to play.

For context, the original daytona usa was running on $15,000 USD dedicated arcade hardware which was co developed with Sega, Fujitsu and GE aerospace. I think it was an unrealistic expectation at the time to get a port of the game that even resembled what we got in the arcades on a home system which retailed for under $300 USD. Compromises had to be made.

I remember writing in to Sega Power magazine to tell them their review was wrong. I think they gave it 78%. I argued the way the cars handled over the kerbs was amazing, that the graphics had massive draw distances and that it was just so fast. As a professional games journalist today, I think I would have given it less than 78% even though I enjoyed it. The Saturn desperately needed high-quality software to keep it alive while the PlayStation steamrollered all opposition, yet this and The House of the Dead released around the same time were just so scrappy as to be unrecognisable compared to their arcade counterparts - criticism that could not be levelled at the earlier Sega Rally Championship and Virtua Fighter 2, and to a lesser extent Manx TT and Virtual On. Still, of all the Saturn games, this is still one of my favourites. It's absolutely bonkers, but then so was Sega :)

This game was based on the DTM '95 series and ITC '96 series. It included the Opel Calibra V6 (Manuel Reuter, Yannick Dalmas, Ni Amorim and JJ Lehto), the Mercedes C-Class V6 (Bernd Schneider, Dario Franchitti and Jan Magnussen), the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti (Alessandro Nanini, Nicola Larini, Michele Alboreto and Christian Danner) and the Toyota Supra from the JGTC '95 (Masanori Sekiya and Michael Krumm). Well... the images you show in the beginning of your video are neither from the DTM nor ITC. They are from the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship), the series that are the base for the two first TOCA Touring Car video games for the PlayStation 1. But now what real matters... I liked the video and the explanations. I have the game and played it countless times. At the beginning it is, as you have said, very hard, but with a bit of patience we can get there. Thanks for the video.

I played XL/2097 before I ever played the original. I've always meant to try original, I'll probably try Saturn version. WipeoutXL is actually what got me to by a PS1 over a Saturn at the time (we never got it in US and I didn't even know it was on Saturn then), although I got a Saturn a year or two later toward end of its life because I wanted Shining Force III, PDS and so many imports so bad.

Other than the pop-in, which they did a great job of minimizing for the Championship Circuit Edition, I love the way the early chunky 3d graphics look. They are crude but still endearing to me, kind of like the way Super Mario Brothers and Mega Man 2 on the NES are crude but endearing. They aged badly when the Dreamcast and PS2 came out, but each subsequent console generation made them seem more 'retro' and less 'outdated'.

Saturn was the same price as the PS1, people are just easily tricked by marketing. Saturn was 400 and came with Virtua Fighter and built in memory. PS1 was 300 but if you wanted to play a game with your new console that was another 60, and if you wanted to save that game that was another 40. So they were both 400 bucks.

  • @laurenalexander4438

Uh, no. The original port of Daytona was fuckin amazing. Especially compared to the 16 bit stuff I was playing, and the untextured 3D I'd seen on Jaguar. Not to mention, it ran smoother than Need For Speed on 3DO. It was fast, fluid, and fun. And sure, the arcade version looked better, but so what? CCE had a garbage soundtrack. While the graphics were technically better, the aesthetics suck. The use of color was better in the original
